RADA Interview
RAD and DSED Assessment (RADA) Interview (Minnis, Lehmann & Monette, 2018).
The RADA interview is a revised version of the CAPA-RAD interview (Minnis et al., 2009) updated to reflect DSM-5 criteria. It assesses symptoms of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED), two diagnoses in the “Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders” section of the DSM-5. The RADA includes 20 main items (9 items relating to DSED symptoms, 11 items relating to RAD symptoms) and 12 additional items potentially associated with RAD and/or DSED (generally used in a research context). Each item includes two to five questions, which help to explore the caregivers’ responses. The caregivers’ responses for each item are rated on a scale of 0 (symptom not present), 1 (symptom somewhat present, but not clinical) or 2 (symptom definitely present, clinical level). Each item presents a coding guide to generate more consistent scores from one coder to another. The RADA can also be administered in a short version (10 items “strictly DSM-5”) in order to reduce administration time. The validation study of our team (Archambault et al., accepted) carried out with 368 children aged 5 to 12 (98 children from the community, 147 children placed in foster families, 123 children placed in a rehabilitation center) indicates that the RADA shows excellent psychometric properties in terms of inter-rater reliability, internal consistency of the scales, factorial validity, convergent validity and known groups validity.
